Projects

Our Club promotes, initiates, and supports projects to enrich the quality of life of residents living in aged care facilities by providing digital resources. The Club is involved in producing sets of digital images covering a range of topics. The Club welcomes enquiries relating to accessing the resource topics, the use of digital photo frames and the scanning of residents’ family photos for viewing on photo frames or a suitable TV.

Clubs wishing to provide a Digital Image Resource Package for a local aged care facility, or an Aged Care Facility wishing to purchase a package themselves, should contact us.

Several of our lion members have been trained through the Lions Eye Health Program, to conduct vision screenings for children. This is an initiative that involves visiting schools or community groups, and screening for: spot vision 9myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, anisometropia, binocular vision and anisocoria), visual acuity, colour vision, and stereo depth perception. These screenings are conducted free of charge, and if any issues detected, the children are referred to an optometrist for further examination.

We also collect used Eye Glasses and Hearing aids, see under “projects for collection centres, recycling them using Sight and Hearing volunteer professionals, to benefit under-privileged in remote aboriginal lands and in neighbouring countries. These items can be brought to our monthly Garage Sale or for local collection, contact us.

We support the Australian Lions Children’s Mobility Foundation. (Please cut from envelope leaving at 5mm margin on stamps). If you wish to aid our “Stamp Collection” of used stamps, cut them from the envelopes (leave a 3mm border around the stamps) and deliver to our shed – these are sorted and sold to raise funds in order to donate Walking Aids through the “Lions Mobility Foundation” and NOVITA to disabled children. Hearing dogs have transformed the lives of hundreds of Australians and given their owners the opportunity to become more independent and are loyal companions for many years.

Our Club runs a monthly Sale located at the corner of Glebe Road and Portrush Road, (opposite the Fire Station), Glen Osmond on the First Saturday of each month.

Our Bargain Centre has tools, fiction books, bric-a-brac, china, kitchenware, electrical goods in working order, toys & games, manchester, clothing and footwear. CDs, DVDs, records, collectables, paintings, and much more.

The Club also runs a sausage sizzle to provide morning tea (and even breakfast) to the hungry customers and the Lions members on garage sales days. Sausage with onion with sauce & mustard $2.50, Tea, Coffee $2 & Lions Cake Slices $2 ea.

All proceeds primarily support community projects and local charities.

The Clubs participates in KESAB clean up conducted in March each year, with our nominated area Tusmore Park.

We collect discarded papers and rubbish and ensure that any maintenance needed on our shelter sheds and BBQ area is noted for future repair.

Environmental Projects also include involvement in the Mt Lofty and Hills Natural Resource Management Board’s “Our Patch” programme where we get involved in tree planting programmes on the hill face zone of the Adelaide Hills.

Our patch is the Dashwood Gully Reserve at the top end of Dashwood Road, and the “The Old Bullock Track” which joins the Dashwood Road.  We have progressively re-vegetated a fair portion of this lower area (previously a rubbish tip) over the past few years.

Diabetes is a chronic condition that affects millions of people worldwide, and its prevalence is on the rise. By raising awareness, we can help individuals understand the risk factors, symptoms, and management strategies associated with diabetes. This knowledge empowers people to make informed lifestyle choices, promoting early detection, prevention, and better self-care. Supporting diabetes awareness also helps combat the stigma surrounding the condition, fostering a more inclusive and understanding society.

Our Lions Club is dedicated to making a positive impact on the lives of the disadvantaged in our community. Through our collections, we gratefully accept donations of household goods and clothing to support those in need. By donating your gently used items, you can help us bring comfort and support to individuals and families facing difficult circumstances. These donations not only provide essential resources but also promote sustainability by giving items a second life. With generous contributions from the public, we can make a tangible difference in the lives of those less fortunate, offering them a helping hand and a renewed sense of hope.

In conjunction with the Burnside Village Shopping Centre and the City of Burnside, Christmas trees are erected in the foyer of the Council Chambers and outside of the Coles Supermarket inside the Burnside Village Shopping Centre – Near Coles.

At both locations, From 30th Nov to 24th Dec., the public are requested to donate non-perishable food items, gifts for young children and for less well-off Adults.

Club members are rostered to collect these gifts from the Christmas trees and deliver them to several aid agencies in Adelaide, including Anglicare, Uniting Care Wesley and St Lukes Mission for distribution to needy families for some festive cheer.

Anyone who has suitable items but cannot visit these Trees, and you live within or close to the Burnside Council area, we can collect such items and ensure delivery to one of the above agencies.

This program is a prestigious event for young people, giving them an unequalled opportunity to experience an interview situation – in a friendly atmosphere – and a change to practice their public speaking skills.

This program is primarily for young people between the ages of 16 and 19.
